Ballina: Knox-Gore Monument at Belleek Manor

Sheltered in a dense forest on a bank of the River Moy, the eye-catching Knox-Gore Monument is a familiar landmark to visitors who walk through the popular Belleek Wood.  Erected as a memorial to Sir Francis Arthur Knox-Gore (1803-73) of Belleek Manor, the monument has generated a number of local legends, the most popular of which is that the mound surrounded by a waterless moat was necessary to accommodate the burial of a favourite horse!  Visitors to Belleek Wood will also see the SS Creteboom, a reinforced concrete tugboat hull dating back to the First World War (1914-8), purchased in 1937 by the Ballina Harbour Commissioners as a sandstop and marooned in the centre of the River Moy.
