Ballina: Belleek Manor

A nineteenth-century manor house erected on the outskirts of Ballina for Sir Francis Arthur Knox-Gore (1803-73), Belleek Manor was described by Samuel Lewis (1837) as 'a noble mansion in the later English style of architecture…beautifully situated on the banks of the Moy, in a fine demesne tastefully laid out and richly planted'.  The same description applies today.  Guided tours of Belleek Manor are available in Autumn and Winter.  The visitor will be told the history of the house and its former owners and will see the private dining rooms and drawing rooms decorated in an opulent Romantic style.  Other highlights of the tour are the Marshall Doran Collection, one of the finest collections of arms and armour in Ireland; the Fossil Collection; and the Grace O'Malley Room containing a four poster bed belonging to Grace "Granuaile" O'Malley (c.1530-1603).
