The National Inventory of Architectural Heritage has partnered with Galway City Council to create Wonder Wander<\/em> walking trails.\u00a0 The Wonder Wander<\/em> walking trails have been developed in collaboration with the local communities.\u00a0 In addition to well-known public buildings, each trail shines a light on some of the lesser known architectural details and the stories that are associated with these unique places.<\/p>\n

The Wonder Wander<\/em> for Eyre Square begins at the Browne Doorway, a seventeenth-century doorcase salvaged from the Browne Mansion in Abbeygate Street, re-erected as the grand entrance to the city’s principal public park in 1905.\u00a0 Taking in all four sides of Eyre Square, highlights of the trail include a nineteenth-century gentlemen’s club, a pub with links to Ed Sheeran, a railway hotel which boasted Walt Disney and Paul McCarney as guests, and a bank whose decorative details will leave you wriggling like a worm!\u00a0 The trail ends with a word of advice to explore the many sculptures and statues that fill Eyre Square including the fountain by Eamonn O’Doherty (1939-2011) designed to resemble the red sails of a traditional Galway Hooker.<\/p>\n
