Description

Gateway, extant 1840, with rusticated rendered block-and-start surround framing timber boarded door. Street fronted at entrance to grounds of Wexford County Infirmary.

Appraisal

A gateway surviving as an interesting relic of the Wexford County Infirmary (established 1767). NOTE: A plaque records an episode connected with the 1798 Insurrection when the infirmary 'was used as a hospital for the wounded United Irish Insurgents [and] was set on fire by troops under the command of General Gerard Lake [1744-1808]'.
