Description

Pair of rubble limestone gate posts (on circular plan) with wrought-iron flat bar gate, erected c.1900. Brick corbel course and cement domed capping to gate posts. Gate gives access to field on Streamstown Road to the north of Kilbeggan

Appraisal

This humble and functional gateway represents a typical example of the North Leinster vernacular tradition of gate posts on circular plan with associated simple flat-bar wrought-iron gate. Once a common sight, these gateways are rapidly disappearing as field gates are widened to accommodate modern farming practices. Constructed of local rubble limestone, this modest gateway blends sensitively into the rural landscape to the north of Kilbeggan.
