Detached seven-bay two-storey national school, dated 1934, having a central projecting Doric entrance porch with broken pediment over to the main elevation (south). Hipped natural slate roof with a central copper cupola surmounted by a copper cross finial. Cement rendered walls with moulded architraves to window openings, raised rendered block quoins to the corners and a rendered eaves cornice. Square-headed window openings with replacement uPVC windows. Square-headed doorway to entrance porch having timber panelled double doors, an architraved surround, multi-paned overlight over and with a date plaque above (to pediment). Set back from road surrounded by school yard and bounded to street frontage by rendered walls surmounted by iron railways. Central pair of rendered gate piers (on square-plan) having a wrought-iron gate.

An attractive school with classically-inspired proportions and detailing that survives with its original form and character intact. Classical-style school buildings were the norm in State-sponsored projects during the first years of the Free State. By the late 1930s the Modernist idiom became the preferred style for State-sponsored school buildings. The Doric doorcase and copper cupola are noteworthy features of artistic merit. This austere building, along with the boundary wall and railings, make a positive contribution to the streetscape of Athlone.
