Description

Freestanding four-arch hump-back bridge built c.1820. The bridge is constructed in rubble granite. With triangular cut waters. This bridge carries the main road over the Aughrim River. The bridge links the railway and the later southern developments with the oldest part of the town.

Appraisal

This is a well preserved early 19th-century bridge which helps to create a 19th-century feel to the southern town approach. Two plaques commemorate 'ANNE DEVLIN [1781-1851] FAITHFUL SERVANT OF ROBERT EMMET [1778-1803] KINSWOMAN OF MICHAEL DWYER [1772-1825] HEROINE OF THE RISING OF 1798' and 'ALL THOSE WHO LOST/THEIR LIVES IN THE CAPTURE OF AUGHRIM/BY/GENERAL JOSEPH HOLT'S UNITED IRISHMEN/ON SEPT. 19TH 1798'.
