Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, c.1890, with inscribed “VR” royal cipher. Set in limewashed random rubble stone wall.

Appraisal

An attractive feature of the streetscape, making a subtle impression on the visual appeal of the street scene. The post box represents an important early-surviving artefact of mass-produced cast-iron work, while the raised details, particularly the royal cipher, attest to a period when Ireland was part of the British Empire.
