Description

Freestanding cast-iron pillar post box, c.1915, with “GR” royal cipher, and moulded shallow domed capping having profiled cornice. Road fronted on concrete brick cobbled footpath.

Appraisal

An attractive item of street furniture that represents an early-surviving artefact of mass-produced cast-iron. The raised detailing contributes significantly to the artistic design quality of the piece, while the royal cipher in particular is of importance as a tangible reminder of the period when Ireland formed part of the British Empire.
