Description

Freestanding cast-iron pillar post box, c.1930, with raised 'P&T' monogram in Gaelic script, and shallow domed capping. Road-fronted on concrete brick cobbled footpath.

Appraisal

This cast-iron post box, which is still in use, is an attractive item of street furniture and represents an early surviving artifact of mass-produced cast ironwork. The raised detailing is of artistic interest, the Gaelic script representing the continued promotion of a national identity within the emergent independent state.
