Description

Single-arch cast-iron road bridge over canalised river, c.1910. Now disused. Cast-iron V-profile parapets with cast-iron coping. Single shallow segmental arch with mass concrete deck over. Sited spanning canalised section of (Saint?) John’s River with cut-granite steps to north-west, and originally accessing Waterford Gas Works to south.

Appraisal

An elegant and decorative bridge, one of a pair in the immediate vicinity (including 22504552/WD-5632-22-552), which is now disused but which serves as evidence of the former Waterford Gas Works on site. The construction of the bridge using cast-iron is of technical interest, and the bridge forms an attractive, discreet feature in the locality.
