Terraced three-bay four-storey house, c.1800, retaining some early fenestration. Renovated and part refenestrated, c.1975, with replacement shopfront inserted to ground floor. Now in use as offices to upper floors. Pitched slate roof with clay ridge tiles, and replacement uPVC rainwater goods, c.2000, on rendered eaves. Painted rendered walls. Square-headed window openings with stone sills, and decorative rendered surrounds having shallow pediments to first and to second floors. 1/1 timber sash windows to first and to second floors with replacement timber casement windows, c.1975, to top floor. Replacement marble-clad shopfront, c.1975, to ground floor with fixed-pane aluminium display windows having round-headed panels over, and glazed aluminium double doors with round-headed panel over. Road fronted with concrete footpath to front.
This house is a substantial composition of unusual proportions, the blank wall surface to the left of the building suggesting that it may possibly originally have been a larger structure or may incorporate part of the fabric of an adjacent building. The house remains relatively well maintained and retains important early or original salient features to the upper floors. Of special interest are the attractive decorative rendered surrounds to the openings, which are a good example of local craftsmanship and which enhance the artistic design quality of the composition. The shopfront, however, does not compliment the entire composition and detracts from the visual appeal of the site at street level.
