Description

Thirteen-arch road bridge, built c.1820, with random coursed stone walls. Cut limestone voussoirs to segmental arch-rings and V-cutwaters up and down stream. Cast-iron tie-bars. Ballyforan Bridge crosses the River Suck, the boarder between Counties Roscommon and Galway.

Appraisal

Ballyforan Bridge is a robust and handsome masonry viaduct, which is a reminder of the engineering achievements of the local craftsmen in the nineteenth century. It is a substantial road bridge and forms an important crossing for this boarder village, giving access to Galway from Roscommon.
