Description

Freestanding cast-iron water pump, erected c.1850, with cylindrical shaft with horizontal banding, fluted ogee-cap with finial, and cow-tail style pumping arm. Pump set back from road surrounded on three sides by rendered wall.

Appraisal

This water pump, situated opposite Castlecoote's Roman Catholic Church, is an attractive piece of street furniture. Water pumps were once an integral part of everyday life in rural Irish towns and villages, providing a communal water source for those in the locality.
