Freestanding cylindrical cast-iron pillar box, erected c.1885, with moulded neck. Royal insignia of Victoria to door. Cast-iron lettering to base reads "A. HANDYSIDE & CO. LTD DERBY & LONDON". Post box is sited on corner at junction of streets.
This freestanding post box, cast during the reign of Queen Victoria, who reigned from 1837 to 1901, is well designed with a decorative cap and high relief lettering. Letter boxes were first introduced to Ireland in 1879 and were made by Handysides of Derby, who continued to make post boxes throughout Queen Victoria's reign.
