Description

Victoria Lock, built in 1843, to replace Hamilton's Lock and Clonaheenogue Canal. It was built by the Shannon Commission engineer, Thomas Rhodes. Cast-iron mooring bollards with 1844 date stamp. The old canal and lock, dating from the 1750s, is still present.

Appraisal

Manufacturer's name Fenton, Murray and Jackson Engineers Leeds on cast-iron bollards to site. The lock is significant for its size as it allowed the passage of larger steamers used on the river at the time.
