Description
Single-arch masonry accommodation bridge, built c.1795, over the Grant Canal. Random rubble construction. Arch is semi-elliptical in profiole. Finely dressed voussoirs. Towpath on both sides. Parapets with dressed limestone coping. String course across faces extending to terminal piers. Humped deck and ramped approaches.
Appraisal
This accommodation bridge is now used by pedestrians only who use the former towpaths along the canal as a valuable recreational facility. Typical in its design and construction to other bridges along this stretch of the canal, Rathmore Bridge forms part of an interesting group of canal related structures. This section of the canal was opened in 1797. |
