Description

Terraced five-bay two-storey house, extant 1799, on a cranked L-shaped plan with single-bay two-storey side (east) elevation. Renovated with replacement shopfronts inserted to ground floor. Replacement pitched and hipped artificial slate roof on a cranked L-shaped plan with ridge tiles terminating in cement rendered chimney stacks having stepped capping supporting terracotta pots, and cast-iron rainwater goods on rendered cut-limestone eaves retaining cast-iron octagonal or ogee hoppers and downpipes. Rendered, ruled and lined walls with rusticated rendered quoins to corners. Segmental-headed central door opening with drag edged dragged cut-limestone block-and-start surround centred on keystone framing timber panelled door having fanlight. Square-headed window openings (first floor) with cut-limestone sills, and concealed dressings framing one-over-one timber sash windows having exposed sash boxes. Street fronted on a corner site with concrete footpath to front having cut-limestone kerbing.

Appraisal

A house erected by Reverend Alexander Glendenning (d. 1799) on a site leased (1787) from John Denis Browne (1756-1809), third Earl of Altamont (Westport Estate Papers), representing an integral component of the late eighteenth-century domestic built heritage of Westport with the architectural value of the composition suggested by such attributes as the angular plan form centred on a restrained doorcase not only demonstrating good quality workmanship, but also showing a pretty radial fanlight; the diminishing in scale of the openings on each floor producing a graduated visual impression; and the high pitched roofline. Although much modified at street level, the elementary form and massing otherwise survive intact together with quantities of the historic or original fabric, thereby upholding much of the character or integrity of a house making a pleasing visual statement in The Octagon.
