Description

Freestanding cast-iron vent pipe, c.1900, with fluted pedestal having moulded necking supporting cylindrical shaft with saw tooth-profiled parapet on moulded stringcourse. Road fronted.

Appraisal

Making a pleasing, if subtle impression in the streetscape a vent pipe manufactured by the Drogheda Ironworks foundry represents an important artefact of early mass-produced cast-iron work. However, while refined detailing betrays the concerns with aesthetic effects the vent pipe remains of primary importance for the associations with the development of a sewage system in Freshford in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.
