Description

Six-arch humpback limestone bridge, built c.1780, carrying road over Kilcolgan River. Bridge comprises central section with elliptical arch, built c.1870, and earlier outer sections, with four smaller, round arches to west and one to east, all with tooled voussoirs. Cut-stone walls and parapet walls to middle section, rubble walls and parapet walls with tooled copings to east and west sections.

Appraisal

This substantial bridge is a testament to the skills and engineering of local craftsmen. The varying arch types and sizes add visual interest, as does the contrast between the rubble limestone walls and cut and tooled stonework. The alterations to the bridge in the latter half of the nineteenth century were probably a response to changes in the flow of the river.
