Description

Freestanding lime kiln, built c.1820. Dressed limestone to lower courses with rubble stone above. All elevations slightly battered with buttresses to south and west sides. East side partly rebuilt. Camber-arched opening to front having roughly dressed stone voussoirs, rubbed brick arch and corbelled stone slabs over raking out opening. Recent plaques to archway with recent iron gate to front.

Appraisal

This large lime kiln stands as testament to the importance of industrial processes being carried out in the nineteenth century and is associated with the construction of the nearby Fever Hospital. It forms part of the varied built heritage of NUIG's grounds.
