Description

Freestanding cast-iron "pillar box" post box, between 1901-1910. Road fronted on tarmacadam footpath.

Appraisal

A "pillar box" post box supplied by A. [Andrew] Handyside and Company (established 1848) of Derby and London representing an interesting example of mass-produced cast-iron work making a pleasing, if largely inconspicuous visual statement in Pottery Road: meanwhile, only a feint outline survives of the "chiselled off" King Edward VII (1840-1910; r. 1901-10) royal cipher (cf. 60260252).
