Terrace of nineteen two-bay two-storey houses, built c.1890, having recessed entrances to front (west) elevation and two-storey returns to rear (east). Pitched slate and artificial slate roofs, hipped at ends, with red brick chimneystacks having red brick cornices, and dentillated red brick eaves course. Red brick walls laid in Flemish bond to front and south elevations, rendered walls to north elevation. Segmental-headed window openings having cut granite sills, one-over-one timber sash windows and replacement timber and uPVC windows. Segmental-headed porch openings having red brick hood mouldings, dropped red brick keystones, and chamfered red bricks reveals. Recessed square-headed door opening with timber panelled doors, overlights, sidelights, cut granite steps and tiled platforms. Front gardens enclosed by cast-iron railings on cut granite plinths, with matching cast-iron pedestrian gate. Some tiled garden paths.
This terrace retains much of its early form and character, and fabric including cast-iron railings and some windows. The repetition of the same house type gives a pleasing coherence while subtle brick decoration adds interest to the front elevations. Front garden boundaries remain intact, maintaining the early suburban character of the streetscape. Housing in Dufferin Avenue was developed in the late nineteenth century, at the edge of the city, in an area that had been largely devoted to manufacturing. The new residential streets provided housing for tradespeople and skilled workers of the city.
