Description

Cast-iron post box, c.1905, with ER VII insignia and crown motif, set in concrete surround into a blocked up door in the front elevation of the Coppanagh Corn Mill.

Appraisal

Set into the wall of Coppanagh Corn Mill at Coppanagh, this rural post box is an indicator of a formerly thriving rural industrial complex. The recognisable form and simple detail of the post box illustrate the artistic qualities of mass production at the time of its casting. Cast-iron post boxes are becoming increasing rare throughout Ireland, often being replaced with mass-produced plastic boxes.
