Freestanding cast-iron pillar post box, c.1890. Wide flat domed cap with ribbed edge. ‘VR’ insignia on door face with letter slot above.
Formerly painted red, the post box is an interesting document of social and political history, recalling the Victorian period when Ireland was a part of the United Kingdom. The simple raised lettering and crown motif of which adds artistic interest to its functional form. Cast-iron post boxes are becoming increasing rare throughout Ireland, often being replaced with mass-produced plastic boxes. It demonstrates the high design and casting that were possible in late nineteenth century mass produced ironwork.
