Description

Wall-mounted cast-iron post box, installed c.1880, having V.R. insignia and crown, and S.E stamp with harp motif. Set within roughcast rendered wall of house. Located along roadside at crossroads.

Appraisal

Post box displaying an interesting combination of original British and later Irish symbols, representing the transition from British rule to Independence, when the State established its own postal system. The post box represents a subtle form of cultural reclamation.
