Freestanding graving dock, built c.1860, with stepped sides. Stepped dressed limestone walls incorporated into quayside with to south.
This finely designed and well executed graving dock has survived in a good condition and, along with the quay wall and neighbouring slipway, contributes positively to the aesthetic of Kinsale harbour. Together they serve as a reminder of the local maritime industry in the nineteenth century. Ships and boats were brought into this dock, gates closed the dock and the water would be pumped out. This created an environment suitable for the carrying out of maintenance and repair.
