Freestanding cast-iron water hydrant, erected c.1880, comprising base, fluted shaft, fluted cap and banding, with lion's head motif to north face. Set on concrete plinth.
This water hydrant displays artistic detailing in its design, with the fine lion's head motif and fluted shaft enlivening this otherwise functional object. Water hydrants such as this played an important social and functional role in nineteenth and twentieth century Ireland, providing an easily accessible communal water source. Situated close to a terrace within Bantry town, this water hydrant makes a positive contribution to the streetscape.
