Description

Ashlar limestone quadrant entrance gateway, built c. 1820. Comprises pair of quatrefoil-plan inner piers, with curved quadrant walls of coursed cut limestone, terminating in square-plan piers. Double-leaf wrought-iron vehicular gates. Coursed rubble limestone boundary wall with render copings to site, having square-headed pedestrian opening with decorative wrought-iron gate.

Appraisal

This entrance, exhibiting fine craftsmanship, forms a grand entrance to the site of the now ruinous Buttevant Castle. The quatrefoil-plan piers are most unusual.
