The main arch is of limestone and the rest of red-clay slate. Sandstone walls with cut limestone piers, low parapet and limestone copings.
Eighteenth century bridge spanning the south channel of the River Lee. Significant as a model of mid-eighteenth century engineering, and important also for its continuing use. Reputed to have had the longest span of any bridge in Ireland for a short time, until Thomas Ivory's Lismore Bridge was erected in 1775.
