Main gateway to army barracks, erected c.1932, consisting of pair of channelled ashlar limestone piers on square-plan, flanked by sections of ashlar limestone quadrant walls with ashlar coping and pistol loop openings. Square-headed pedestrian opening set in round-headed recess to south. Wrought-iron gate to main entrance, timber door to pedestrian entrance. Gateway set in coursed rubble limestone wall surrounding Custume Barracks.
This fine ashlar gateway is an attractive feature on Grace Road. It was erected on the present site on Grace Road in 1932 using stone salvaged from a dismantled caponiere. The former main entrance to the barracks was on the site of Ss. Peter and Paul's Cathedral (15000012) and had to be moved following the construction of this building in the early 1930s. It forms part of an important group of military-related structures associated with Custume Barracks.
