Description

Freestanding crystalline Irish limestone statue of Seán MacDermott, a leader of the Easter 1916 Rising. Carved by Albert Power and erected in 1940 at the central cross roads of Kiltyclogher. Set on a stone plinth with plaques to front and rear. Statue stands against a section of wall, representing an elevation of Kilmainham Gaol.

Appraisal

This memorial to Seán MacDermott, the 1916 leader, is situated in the centre of Kiltyclogher. The monument commemorates thirteen men from Leitrim who died in the 1916 Rising. MacDermott is placed against cut stonework that represents the wall of Kilmainham Gaol, where he was executed. This memorial stands a few miles from Sean McDermott's birthplace is an important piece of Irish art.
