Cavan: Catholic Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Felim

An architectural tour de force, the Catholic Cathedral of Saints Patrick and Felim occupies an elevated site overlooking Cavan.  A late masterpiece by Ralph Henry Byrne (1877-1946) of Dublin, the neo-Classical cathedral includes references to the architecture of James Gibbs (1682-1754), the lofty spire rising from behind an impressive portico recalling the Church of Saint Martin-in-the-Fields, London.  The splendid interior, largely unaltered, boasts many fine examples of ecclesiastical art with jewel-like stained glass by George Collie (1904-75) and the Harry Clarke Stained Glass Studios of Dublin.
