Carlow: Duckett's Grove

Rising above the tree tops and visible from the Tullow Road, a plethora of towers and miniature turrets draw the visitor's attention to Duckett's Grove.  An eighteenth-century Classical house transformed into a fairy tale Gothic castle by Thomas Alfred Cobden (1794-1842), Duckett's Grove remained the seat of the Duckett family until its destruction by accidental fire in 1933.  Access to the interior of the picturesque ruin is prohibited but the interconnecting walled gardens and a small wooded pleasure ground, adopted by Carlow County Council in 2005 and the subject of ongoing restoration, have quickly become a premier tourist destination in County Carlow.
